Last week, I did some exercises at The Bedford Handbook. That is very helpful for international student to learn the gummer for writing. After this exercises, I think there are three parts that are very helpful for me. The first one is Active vs. Be verbs, That could let me know how to use Be verb, and what kind of different between active and be verbs. For example, Be Verb: Sudden loss of weight can be an indicator of many serious health problems. Active: Sudden loss of weight can indicate many serious health problems. The second one is Active vs. Passive verbs; this exercise cloud let me know how to use Active and Passive verbs. When I want to write more powerful and effective sentences, then I can use the active verbs form, otherwise, I can use passive verbs. The last one that I learned is active verbs. That was the one I never use is before when I wrote many paper, but now, I know how to use it. For example, Active: peter cleans the room every day. Passive: The room is cleaned by peter every day.
After all, this is a nice exerises, and it is very helpful, i learned a lot from it.

Group Assigment for 1/24/2012

8.1  Active vs Passive verbs
Active verbs form more powerful and effective sentances than passive verbs. (Using passive verbs isn't wrong but can be used intentionally to soften the action, downplay the main character, or when we don't know who the main character is).

How to recognize active and passive sentances.
  1. Find the subject (main character)
  2. Find the main verb (the action)
  3. Examine the relationship between the two (who is performing the action?)
    • If the subject is performing the action then it is active
    • If something else (named or unnamed) is performing the action then it is passive

8.2  Active vs Be verbs
Sentences that use be verbs are more week than sentences that use active verbs. (For example: be, am, is, are, was, were, being, been).

Be Verb: Sudden loss of weight can be an indicator of many serious health problems.
Active: Sudden loss of weight can indicate many serious health problems.

8.3 Active verbs (edit and compare)
Active:  Furkan cleans the room every week.
Passive: The room is cleaned by Furkan every week.

Spelling

I will talk about the problem is spelling. For the international students, the spelling is very difficult for us to remember. sometime when i was writing something, if i make some spelling mistakes. the sentences of meaning will be very different that what i want to write.
For example:

Their looking for a new sight where the gopher can build it's home.
it should be:
They are looking for a new site where the gopher can  build its home.

The reason that i choose this problem is I always make the mistakes of spelling when i write the paper, then the reader always difficult to understand what i want to say. So for this problem, i think i should pay more attention for spelling when I want to write anything.

Story in a box

A Sudden Day

Once upon a time, on a small island called Gozo, lived a happy musician. He loves playing his drums. When the day was nice and peaceful, he enjoys going to fish on his homemade canoe, which is a small wooden canoe with feather inside.
One day, he was fishing, and all of sudden, he saw something was floating on the ocean. Nearer and clearer he realized that it was a black woman who is drowning, with a bag.
He saved her and brought her to his own farm on the island. He took great care of her, drying her up and covering her with his woolen blanket. Meanwhile, he used chestnuts to make a bread for her and cooked hot soup in the clay container.
After a while, the black woman went to conscious. She was in panic and tried to protect the bag she carried with. The man explained to her that she was in safety. Slowly, the black woman calmed down and started to talk “Please help me. There are big group of robbers came to my hometown and they plunder at no allowance. They killed my families, to the last man, in a futile attack. They even wanted to rob our religious temple. I risked my life to protect, but the only thing I can save is the head of our God statue”. She opened the bag and showed the head to the man. That was such a beautiful god status and it looks real!
The woman pulled out her wallet and gave all her coins to the man, begging him to help to get her back to the hometown. The man promised her that he would help. Every morning, the man stood by the ocean and testing the direction and scale of the wind. He used the ruler to measure the distance from Gozo to her hometown on the map. Hence, he can approximately know how long it will take to send her home by his canoe.
Finally, it is the time. He gave her a stamp that he made by himself, with all the best wishes.

There are some people will introduce about their hobbies, dream, goals, family and so on. There are some people will introduce about themselves from other way, such as, their background or life experience. anyway, before you answer the question, you should have clear organization how to introduce yourself.
